What is your motivation for doing research related to free-flowing rivers?

I had the privilege to grow up near the Soča, one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, still free-flowing in its upper part. The landscape formed by the free-flowing Soča has a strong value for me personally, but also for the local communities, economy, and visitors from around the world. I believe that these values should be considered when making decisions about the few remaining free-flowing rivers.

Why should we defend these wild rivers?

Wild rivers provide habitats for rare species, spaces for paddling, fishing, swimming, and chilling, are a source of inspiration and help connect people to nature. All of this is affected when rivers are dammed or channelled, and has already been lost in too many landscapes.
