What is your motivation for working with Balkan River Defence? My involvement has been motivated by the importance of freshwater ecosystems. I’m a kayaker, and as such, I know about the
potential of outdoors sports for collecting information and monitoring ecosystems. Environmental monitoring is used in the preparation of environmental impact assessments, and can contribute towards mitigating human activities that carry a risk of harmful effects on the natural environment and rivers.
Why should we defend these wild rivers?
The Balkans are recognized the beauty of their natural landscapes – which include the last free flowing rivers of Europe. Free and wild rivers are necessary to conserve because of their diverse
ecosystem functions, such as sediment and nutrients transport, but also because of their cultural significance for local people.
